During pregnancy, medical care can be provided by a midwife, a doctor or both a doctor and a midwife combined. If you are already receiving prenatal care from a gynecologist and would also like a midwife to accompany you, please speak with your doctor to determine which checkups a midwife can take over.

This informational clip from the Swiss Midwives Association will give you some insight into what pregnancy checkups are like with a midwife.

The basic health insurance covers the following costs:

  • 6 checkups during a normal pregnancy
  • Additional checkups in case of a high-risk pregnancy or with a medical prescription.
